Customarily borders or friezes were designed to be used as either one or the other. Borders were printed with a block on which, depending on the width, 3 to 8 (or more) rows of the pattern were carved, all oriented in the same direction. In this case, the original printing blocks had only two rows of the pattern, flipped to create a mirror image with a wide space between the two, which allows it to be used full-width as a frieze.
