Serena Woolliams founded The Crewel Collective in 2024 to champion hand embroidered crewel fabric and to celebrate the skills of the master craftsmen with whom she works.
With over 30 years of experience in India, she has collaborated with only the very finest artisans and is delighted to show you the culmination of their work in this collection.
Not only does The Crewel Collective draw upon traditional Kashmiri motifs, they have also updated their color palette and designs to ensure that the fabrics work well in both modern and traditional settings.
An Embroidered Journey
Crewel embroidery dates back to 1077, and today's master artisans still create it in much the same way. The hand embroidery process is meticulous and time-intensive; a single piece of fabric can take months to complete. On average, one artisan can embroider about one foot per day.
First, the pattern is transferred to the base cloth.
The woollen yard is hand-dyed and prepared.
The fabric is embroidered using a hook and a chain stitch.
The completed fabric is inspected and rolled.
