This frieze was discovered in the front parlor of a Greek Revival farmhouse in Schuylerville, New York, along with Adelphi’s Vine and Paisley pattern and the Greek Key Border. All three papers were printed by Jacquemart et Bernard. The frieze demonstrates a return to less abstract, more organic motifs typical of French papers in the 1820s and 1830s.
In the Schuylerville installation, the frieze was printed directly over the paisley pattern of the sidewall paper. This technique was often used in highly refined French papers, as well as in papers produced by French émigré printers like Virchaux, who worked in Philadelphia in the 1810s.
