This frieze was found with the Locust Grove Arabesque in the late-18th century home of William Clough, near Louisville Kentucky. While the fragments of the Arabesque were relatively small and necessitated deriving most of the information needed for its reproduction from other sources, the remains of the frieze found at Locust Grove were complete.
It is interesting to note that while this is most definitely a frieze – to be installed at the ceiling line – the paper hanger hired by Clough also employed it as a border to frame the doors and windows. Tassels and swags stand proud to the left and right as well as adhering to the dictates of gravity at the ceiling and chair rail.
