Steel grates were expensive items of fashionable use and decoration during the 18th Century. In 1778, Mrs. Lybbe Powys drew attention to a ‘sweet steel grate’ at Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire, which cost the large sum of £95, equivalent to £8,000 today.
