Scipio Candlestick

The Scipio Candlestick is carved from remnants of precious marbles reserved during the making of Jamb’s chimneypieces, where wider blocks are selected to cut mouldings cleanly, leaving portions set aside in the workshop. Designed as a smaller item inspired by Grand Tour objects, the Scipio Candlestick is carved from these fragments and takes its stepped profile and carved motifs from the sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus in the Tomb of the Scipios, Rome.
There is no choice in the marble that you purchase - just the knowledge that each candlestick has been carved by hand by a craftsman from a smaller portion of a block, whether Portoro, Breccia, Seravezza, or another variety. What you receive is simply the piece yielded by the marble in hand, taken from the earth and carved at intimate scale into a beautiful object.
Presented in a signature Jamb gift box, the Scipio Candlestick is accompanied by a pair of taper candles made in custom colours with Wax Atelier, in either Jasper Red or Ivory to complement the tone of the marble, and a matchbox inscribed with red pigment that reads “EXIGNE, URIT ET LUCET” - from fire, it burns, and it shines.
